Milan went some way to silencing their critics by beating Lazio and keeping their first clean sheet in 11 games.

The pressure was really on Carlo Ancelotti after Milan's poor start of four points from the opening three games, while they haven't kept a clean sheet in 11 official encounters. Christian Vieri, Alessandro Nesta and Jaap Stam took on their former club, as Paolo Maldini was rested.

Lazio had the confidence going into this tie, as they were in second place and still unbeaten, although goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi was out with a knee injury.

Milan had an aggressive start and Andriy Shevchenko opened the scoring with a wonderful individual effort. He gathered Vieri's pass and skipped round a challenge from Stendardo before placing an accurate angled drive into the near corner of the net.

Two minutes later they had doubled their lead, though Lazio were certainly at fault. Matteo Sereni allowed a deflected Andrea Pirlo cross to squirm under his body and it was child's play for Kaka to tap in the loose ball.

Shevchenko would've scored a third on Pirlo's pass had Luciano Zauri not intercepted and fired another great scoring opportunity straight at Sereni, while Fabio Liverani's effort was well saved at the other end.

Dida flew to tip Massimo Oddo's free kick over the bar, but after the restart Vieri sprung the offside trap on Clarence Seedorf's pass and saw his volley well saved.

A similar Seedorf pass set Shevchenko running moments later and Sereni flew for another spectacular intervention.

Dida performed a fine save on Oddo's half-volley from a tight angle, then Sereni was equally tested on a Marcos Cafu strike with Vieri unable to turn in the loose ball with an overhead kick.

Tommaso Rocchi's header wasn't far off the target, but Lazio played the final 15 minutes in 10 men, as Baronio limped off when all three substitutions had already been completed.

Sereni pushed out Kaka's effort and Massimo Ambrosini was unable to turn in the follow-up.
